The Older Men: New Ideas of Canterbury (OMNICAN) is a social and discussion group for older men aged 55 years and older who live in the Canterbury Local Government Area.
The group was established by the Centre following a need identified in the Centre’s ‘Older Men at Risk Project – 75 Not Out’ as a joint venture with OMNI (Older Men:New Ideas) and Canterbury City Council.
Members of OMNICAN meet twice each month for discussions on topics of interest for the men as well as hearing Guest Speakers talking on a range of subjects, such as nutrition, diabetes, financial planning, and so on. Regular outings are also conducted which may include Barbecues at local parks or visits to museums or places or interest.
The members of OMNICAN decide on what activities and discussions they want to undertake. All members are given time to speak at meetings and their views are respected – it is a supportive environment where the men can talk about what they want.
OMNICAN meetings are attended by approximately 15 older men but there is always room for more to join. Meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month between the hours of 9.30am and 12.00 noon. Members pay $4.00 per meeting.
For more information about joining please call the Centre on 9750 9344.
