Lakemba Community Garden
The Lakemba Community Garden was established in 2011 and offers residents within walking distance, and who do not have access to their own garden, the opportunity to grow vegetables and herbs in the company of other residents. The Lakemba Community Garden is located in Jubilee Reserve on the corner of Railway Pde and Bellevue St Lakemba.
The Garden is a space where local residents can grow their own vegetables and contribute toward sustainable living in Sydney.
A total of 30 plots are available in large and small sizes, with two plots allocated to people with a disability and two allocated to local organisations. The Lakemba Community Garden also includes a communal herb spiral built by the Gardeners and other communal planting areas.
Community Gardens are places where people come together to grow fresh food, to learn, relax and make new friends. The Lakemba Community Garden will deliver community savings, financial savings and environmental savings.
The benefits of community gardening include:
- easy access to fresh, nutritious food;
- a sense of achievement that comes through growing some of your own foods;
- making friends with people in the neighborhood;
- learning the skills of gardening;
- healthy outdoor exercise; and
- improving the local environment.
The Lakemba Community Garden was established in partnership with Canterbury City Council and the SAVE Project. The SAVE Program is assisted by the NSW Government through its Environmental Trust and is a partnership between Canterbury City, City of Sydney, Marrickville and Randwick Councils and Housing NSW. SAVE is about designing projects to encourage local residents to participate in their community and bringing greener choices within reach through low or no cost, easy actions.
Plot holders must be residents of the Canterbury Local Government Area and priority will be given to those within a 750 metre square radius of the garden and who do not have access to their own garden.
Eligible Residents pay a fee every six months and must commit to maintaining their plot and participating in at least two working bees each year. The Lakemba Community Garden will be run by the Gardeners through a small Committee and supported under the auspice of Canterbury City Community Centre.
The Lakemba Community Garden also provides a space for training and community activities.
